EDIT: Complete!
The site will be going down for maintenance in about ten minutes (at the time I'm writing this). Again, we're going to try for read-only mode rather than "maintenance mode", but that might not be possible.
We'll keep you updated if it looks like we're going to run long, but we're hoping to complete this in 2 hours or less. Watch the offsite status Twitter account for updates.
EDIT: And, we're back! Just goes to show, when
mark estimates an hour and you schedule 2 hours just to be safe, everything will finish much faster than that.
We've noticed a few instances of icons not loading, and are looking into it.

It was agony to be without your marvellous services for even this long, but it seems we all managed to muddle along somehow ♥ .

But every time it happens, I'm impressed by how fast it all happened. Well done!

(And yeah, a lot of the time, something that doesn't look like cache can be cache anyway -- we've made some recent changes to tweak the headers that are being sent so stuff stops getting cached when it shouldn't be, which should help in future.)

Blockage seems at least partially term-related; e.g., 'poetry' will provide the first page of results (though clicking 'More results' brings up the error message) but 'poetree' is always blocked. Ditto my experiments with 'lovely' (yes) vs. 'lovelorn' (no), which was making me think that more frequent usages were getting through and rare ones not, except that 'mockingbird' will produce the first page of results where 'bird' does not.

Re: sadness
Re: sadness
The issue here is that the machine is very busy, so some searches are timing out if they're not returning quick enough -- or if all of our search workers are busy with other queries.
I just now submitted a request to our hosting provider to price a new machine with better hardware. As soon as he gets the quote back to me, I'll provision it and then we can move search over to the new machine. This will probably take two weeks start to finish.
I will update
Sorry for dropping the ball here; thanks again for poking me.

(If I notice others in the future, is this comm the best place to leave a comment, or should I open a Support request?)
